Bernice Henderson

Twenty-eight years ago, Bernice joined with a group of women to become a founding member of the Tee-Set Golf Club.  As President and a Board member, Bernice and her organization banded together to put pressure on golf courses to open tee times for women and to provide tees that were more comparable to a woman’s game. Tee-Set created a strong junior program. The juniors received lessons from golf professions, then at least once a week Tee-Set members would meet the juniors on the course where they would walk with them, addressing golf etiquette, rules and helping to foster the joy and spirit of the game.

In the mid-80s Bernice met another group of women looking to improve the competitive playing opportunities for women playing public courses. Bernice joined this group and became a member of the original USGA Michigan WAPL Sectional Committee and served on sectional committees for a number of years. As part of this group, she became a founding member of the MWGA and served on the Board.

Bernice was also a Board Member of the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame for several years. In addition to golf, Bernice served on the State Foster Care Review Committee and was an Administrator for Title 1. Bernice has 5 grandsons and 5 great grandchildren, many of whom play golf. Bernice was elected an MWGA Honorary Member in 2006.

Kathy Heriford

One of the founding members of the MWGA, Kathy has qualified for the WAPL five times — 1986–1989 and 1991. She was MWGA President in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 1993. In 1993 the MWGA joined the Golf Association of Michigan and was the first women’s golf association to do so. Kathy became one of the first two women GAM Governors in 1991 and was instrumental in starting the Atlas Cup. She was appointed to the USGA Women’s Regional Affairs Committee in 1990 and served on that committee until 1999. In 1995 she was appointed to the USGA Women’s Amateur Public Links Committee and has remained as the representative from Georgia. She left Michigan in 1993 and was made an Honorary Member of the MWGA that year.

Kathy is a Field Sales Engineer for Teleco and a Golf Digest Panelist.

The scrambles were very successful and had full fields for many years at Hidden Valley, Drummond Island, The Natural, Marsh Ridge, Black Bear and The Loon. Noreen was appointed to the USGA Women’s Public Links Committee and ran the Northern Sectional for a few years before poor health forced her to give it up. She helps officiate the GAM Senior Women’s Championships when they are held in Northern MI.

Noreen was very active as a player and organizer in women’s golf in the UP and Northern Ontario. She spearheaded an Ontario-wide tournament for the Canadian Customs and Police Officers (men and women) and was the ladies champion 12 times. She started a ladies league of 90 women in the UP.
